What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made “cap” that fits over the entire portion of a tooth that is visible above the gumline. Its job is to protect the underlying dentition from harm and allow the tooth to function normally. Crowns can be used on teeth that have suffered wear and tear, have large cavities, or have undergone root canal treatment. They can also be used solely for aesthetic purposes in some cases.
Traditionally, dental crowns are fabricated by a third-party laboratory. This process can take a few weeks. CEREC crowns are different. CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. That sounds like quite a mouthful, but the concept is easy to understand. Essentially, we use CAD/CAM technology to design and create your crown right here in our office. The process typically takes just a few hours, and it produces beautiful, strong crowns that are made to stand the test of time.
The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

Here is a basic overview of how the CEREC process works:
- We prepare your tooth by shaping it so it will fit well beneath your new crown. This is usually done under local anesthesia.
- We use a special scanner to capture a highly detailed digital impression of your teeth.
- With the help of advanced software, we use the digital impression to design your crown.
- The design gets sent to our in-office milling unit. It creates the crown out of a single block of zirconia (a type of ceramic).
- We verify that the crown meets our expectations before we securely attach it to your tooth.
Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

CEREC crowns offer some outstanding benefits, especially when compared to their traditional counterparts:
- Same-day convenience: You can receive your new crown in a single visit, saving you from multiple appointments and the discomfort of wearing a temporary crown.
- Precise digital impressions: Not only are digital impressions easier than traditional impressions, but they often also lead to more precise results.
- Durability and strength: CEREC crowns are milled from high-quality materials, offering lasting protection and natural dental function.
- Natural aesthetics: The ceramic material is matched to your tooth color, ensuring your crown blends seamlessly with your smile.
- Reduced risk of errors: The digital workflow minimizes manual steps, which helps decrease the chance of mistakes or remakes.
- Affordability: You might think that the advanced technology involved in the CEREC process leads to higher fees, but these crowns are often comparable in price to traditional ones.
